Rocca Sillana di Pomarance, rises at a height of about 500 meters and dominates the Cecina valley and the streams of the Possera, and Pavone, its foundation dates back to the thirteenth century. and it became important in that it pushed back the troops of Philip of Aragon.
Getting even closer to the city of Pisa are the Verruca Fortress in the municipality of Calci, more precisely in Caprona.
This stronghold was present since 780 and was ideally placed to control the Arno river and its plain down to the sea. The walls represent one of the few examples of bastion made with stones of various kinds in place of the characteristic terracotta bricks used at the time for works of military architecture. Also in Calci we find the wonderful Certosa di Calci, a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1366. It currently houses the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa.
Finally, worthy of note, the Rocca di Ripafratta of San Giuliano Terme, a fortification that has always been contested in the alternate struggles between Pisa and Lucca, as the fulcrum of the vast defensive system of this delicate border area and seems to date back to before the year 1000.
