Chianti’s invaluable wine making legacy is passed on through the centuries in the verdant territories between the cities of Florence and Siena, the “capitals of Chianti”. Brands and quality originating from these areas are numerous and is therefore impossible to list them all. We shall stick to the 6 most renowned brands.
1. Chianti Classico
2. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
3. Rosso di Montepulciano
4. Brunello di Montalcino
5. Rosso di Montalcino

CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG (Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin)
It boasts a bright ruby red color and a rich, winey smell and it is both dry and tasty. The number one kind of Chianti Classico is Sangiovese, a wine variety typical to this area, which usually makes up for 80 to 100 % of the drink. For the remaining percentage, the producer will choose among different kinds of grapes: red grape berries, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, as well as white berry grapes such as Malvasia and Trebbiano. In order to attain its unmistakable taste, Classi Chianti must have a minimum of 11 months aging and measure 12 Abv.
VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO
The eastern territory of Valdichiana Senese marks the area of Vino Nobile, produced around Montepulciano. Its main variety is Sangiovese, so its unmistakable main features call to mind the qualities of this typical Chianti grape. It is a fine and tasty wine with an intense ruby red color with a distinct freshness to it. All its aromas with hints of fruit are enriched by perceptions of vanilla, licorice, and tobacco, make it a wine to delight the palate.
ROSSO DI MONTEPULCIANO
This one is surely Vino Nobile’s “sibling”. It is exclusively produced in the Municipality of Montepulciano. It is a red wine with an intense ruby red color and typical to Sangiovese. It has a characteristic aroma with distinct hints of fruit – sour cherries, plumes, and strawberries – and of violets, with slight mineral and herbal nuances. Fill your wine glass and enjoy its fresh, balanced, elegant, and moderately rich.
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
The wine making areas in the region of Chianti sprawl down to its southern area, encompassing famous lands such as the one of Chianti Classico. Its wines have been awarded many important prizes for their quality, aroma, color, and taste. Brunello di Montalcino is exclusively produced with Sangiovese grapes. It is a clear, shiny wine with a vivid ruby red color and characterized by an intense aroma which is lasting and permeating. The taste has distinct traces of undergrowth, aromatic wood, a tinge of vanilla, small fruit, and preserve.
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO
When it comes to high-quality wine, Brunello is not the only variety in Montalcino. For this reason, and for the first time in Italy, producers in this area have been granted two wines with Designation of Origin from the same vineyards, based on precise technical evaluations. Brunello requires long aging, while Rosso not so much. The latter combines particularly vivid and fresh features and boasts a shiny and limpid look of a deep ruby red. It is harmonious, elegant, tasty, and easily combined with any food. It has an intense and fragrant aroma with easily recognizable, typical fresh fruit fragrances.
VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO
One of the most exciting and unique trails for wine-enthusiast tourists is surely “strada della Vernaccia” in San Gimignano, a breathtaking combination of spectacular landscapes and one of the most famous white wines in the world. It is moderately rich, sharp, and with an unmistakable “bouquet” of traces of genisteae, honey, flint stone, almonds, and saffron. It is no aromatic yet doesn’t lack a peculiar charm acquired through ageing. Its unique taste comes from its nuances of minerals, hints of fruit, amber-colored honey, and spices.
Chianti wine is produced over 70 thousand hectares of land between Siena and Florence. The mild weather unique to these territories, the lush vegetation, and the fertile soil had allowed the Etruscans to inhabit the hills of Chianti since the start of the second millennium B.C. However, it was the Medic dynasty to have started production of proper Chianti wine.
