Castiglioncello, a long and reach film history
Castiglioncello, a small gem on the Tirrenic coast, nestled between Livorno and Rosignano, is a prestigious, world-famous touristic location able to attract each year thousands of visitors thanks to the beauty of its bays, pinewoods and cliffs overlooking the sea.
The town, with its Torre Medicea and the numerous luxury villas overlooking the cliffs and the sea, dominating a small promontory, whose shape is clearly distinguishable from afar.
Driving by Quercianella, where the harpin bends begin their steep descent to the sea , we reach the central “Piazzetta” adorned by nice cafés and boutiques immediately recalling the lively atmosphere of the fabulous ‘60s.
Castiglioncello stepped into the limelight in the ‘60s thanks to the success of Dino Risi’s film “Il Sorpasso”, with Vittorio Gassman e J. L. Trintignant starring. The two protagonists, occasional friends, begin their adventure taking the wheel of a Lancia Aurelia B24 in a mid-August desert Rome driving up the Aurelia-way to the Tuscany-coast. Here, a hazardous overtaking on a Calafuria bend, will end tragically with the car going off-road falling down the cliff.
Those were the days when big actors like Gassman, Alberto Sordi, Marcello Mastroianni, to mention some of them, used to spend their holidays in this attractive destination.
At that time nobody would have bet a penny on “Il Sorpasso”, an unpretentious born movie, with a limited budget to be shoot within just 60 days. Unexpectedly the film changed the history of the Italian cinema, becoming a cult film, a tale depicting an entire generational season: the Sixties.
Castiglioncello has also been the set of other cinema’s masterpieces like "La prima cosa bella" by Paolo Virzì, "Viaggio con Anita" by Mario Monicelli, "Enrico Caruso la leggenda di una voce" by Giacomo Gentilomo.
Till nowadays numerous representatives of the international art and culture like spending their holidays in this place where many cultural manifestations and events take place; a unique location, dotted with exclusive properties overlooking the sea, luxury villas surrounded by beauty and tranquility of the Mediterranean scrub.
For those seeking a luxury property for sale in the Etruscan Coast, the main aspects to be considered are the beaches and the sea. The coastline south of Livorno is rocky up to Castiglioncello, ending quite suddenly and becoming sandy up to Baratti. Piombino’s promontory stands out further south, with Populonia on its summit, separating the Gulf of Baratti from Piombino itself. The promontory also lays on the border between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas.
