Marble of Carrara, means all over the world, the Italian marble par excellence that conveys prestige, luxury and exclusivity, so the processing of marble represents for all the Versilia, the most important artisan activity, whose artistic center par excellence is Pietrasanta .
History tells us that the Apuan Alps, were excavated since Roman times, passing through that special and stormy relationship, but always intense and fundamental for his works, which Michelangelo established with the territory, up to the present day, where thanks to new and innovative excavation techniques, these precious marbles are exported all over the world becoming in fact a testimonial of Italian excellence.
The marble of Carrara, which we find in numerous luxury villas for sale in Versilia, contrary to what is believed, is represented by a great variety of types of marble and by different chromatic and structural characteristics: in principle they can be grouped into seven the main varieties that are: Bianco, Statuario, Venato, Arabescato, Calacata, Bardiglio and Cipollino Zerbino.
Bianco is one of the most classic Carrara marble, its main characteristic is that it contains only very limited quantities of impurities, represented by microcrystalline pyrite, insufficient to alter the natural color of the calcite that constitutes it.
Statuario is the finest marble ever, since Roman times has been used in sculpture for its ivory white color and its particular crystalline texture that is well suited to the work of chisel; It is a very rare material and many of the deposits that in the past have provided marble for famous sculptures are now sold out.
Venato is a fairly common marble and, as its name suggests, its main characteristic is to present gray-colored ventures that run through a white background paste or, more often, also slightly greyish.
Arabescato has gray veins, but, unlike the Venate, these draw on the background paste a kind of plot, like an arabesque, hence the name of the rock.
Calacata presents cream-yellow veins on a white or ivory-colored groundmass; the color of the veins is due to the presence in the weaving of the rock of minutissimi crystals of white mica or muscovite: this marble is considered of great value and its availability is rather limited.
In Bardiglio, the background paste becomes gray in color due to the widespread presence in the texture of impurities, represented by very fine pyrite crystals.
Finally, Cipollino is so called because it has very marked streaks of greenish gray, which resemble the internal structure of the onion.
