Lucca Comics & Games: pop culture among prestigious real estate in Lucca
The 2021 edition of this much beloved event will be in-person again
Lucca is famous the world over as a historic city of art due to its artistic and cultural heritage with few equals, its churches and the art they house, and its historic monuments. Unlike many other cities of its kind, Lucca is also linked to contemporary pop culture. Once a year, the event Lucca Comics & Games decorates the city in many colors. In this rich cultural context, Broker Immobiliare Exclusive Real Estate lists prestigious real estate for sale in Lucca’s center of town.
The event originated in 1966 with the name Salone Internazionale dei Comics. It was renamed Lucca Comics in 1993, and again Lucca Comics & Games in 1995. Before 2006, the event took place in Lucca’s conference center, while starting from that year it has taken place inside the medieval walls. In 2016, as well as celebrating its 50th anniversary, the attendee count was estimated at 500.000 through the duration of the event.
After an entirely online edition due to Covid, Lucca Comics and Games will again be in-person, and the tickets were sold out eight days from the first selling day. The event attracts attendees from all of Italy and beyond. Fans of comics, manga and anime, videogames, and fantasy and sci-fi literature come in droves. Different events take place in the many pavilions scattered within the city walls, events such as author interviews, film screenings, and presentations, as well as cosplay contests. There are also many stands that sell themed merchandise.
Many cosplayers can be seen walking along the historic streets, in the crowded squares, and on the city walls. They work on the costumes for months before the event, with great outcomes, especially for cosplayers dressed up as characters from fantasy sagas, who blend in perfectly with the city’s medieval look. Many cosplayers compete in the Classic Cosplay Contest – on 1 November, this year’s event last date – during which a panel votes for the best-crafted cosplay.
Compared to last editions, the festival’s 2021 edition has an extra way to combine contemporary and ancient culture. Dante and the Inferno will be celebrated for the 700th year anniversary of Italy’s supreme poet’s death, who also appears on this year’s event poster. An illustrated edition of the Divine Comedy will be presented in the evening of 29 October, the festival’s first date.
Despite anti-Covid measures, such as rearranging the locations for the stands and pavilions, requiring tickets for all attendees, and supervision in order to guarantee social distancing, it really seems this year’s event is coming back with a bang, especially after an online-only edition last year due to Covid.
