In ancient times, before its current name of Valdicastello Carducci, this area was called Vallebuona (“good valley”), for the Baccatoio brook runs through the valley, making the subsoil very fertile. The first half of its current name comes from the latin wording “Valle Castelli” (“Castles’ Valley”) found in ancient documents. The second half of the name honors the poet Giosuè Carducci (1835-1907), the first Italian to receive a Nobel Prize for Literature, awarded him in 1906.
The area of Valdicastello Carducci is arranged down the long street of the same name. The museum Casa Natale Giosuè Carducci is between the brook and an accommodation facility. The Madonna del Pizzetto can be seen the summit of the highest hill among those surrounding the area. It is a white marble statue which was placed here in 1968. It is reachable with a 15-minute walk, leaving from the Parochial Church and following the trail leading to it. Once at the top, other than the statue you’ll find a fountain, tables, and benches to refresh and enjoy the view.
The parochial church Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta and San Giuseppe dates back to the first half of the 1800s. The construction began in 1820 and ended in 1827. Another important church is the Pieve di San Giovanni, down valley and not far from the cemetery, dating as far back as 1270. This important building almost didn’t survive to see our time period. Its demolition was ordered in 1835 to build the cemetery in its place. However, following orders from the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo, the cemetery was built where it stands today.
