Costa degli Etruschi: luxury real estate on one of Italy’s most famous stretches of coast
Theaters, chatedrals, views, typical cuisine, and luxury real estate
Lucca and Piombino, Tuscany’s two major ports, are at the far ends of the Costa degli Etruschi (Etruscan Coast). This stretch of coast is named after the Etruscan people’s settlements, which are still visible and can still be visited. The city of Livorno has a lot to offer – culture, history, tourism, and typical cuisine. In this rich tourist and cultural context, Broker Immobiliare Exclusive Real Estate lists luxury homes for sale on the Costa degli Etruschi.
The city of Livorno is nicknamed “little Venice” due to its canals and bridges. Its port is the major one in Tuscany and one of the most important in the Mediterranean Sea, both for passenger ferrying and cargo transportation. Not only do celebrities and tycoons come here to dock their luxury yachts, but also the several shipyards in this port build this kind of vessel.
One of the most evocative locations in Livorno is the panoramic terrace Terrazza Mascagni, with its checkered flooring in white and dark marble, which sits directly by the sea. The terrace is bordered with an elegant balustrade with sinuous low columns in reinforced concrete. This landmark is especially enchanting after nightfall, when the coastline is dotted with thousands of lights from the buildings flanking it. Construction work began in 1925 and ended in 1928, but it was named after the second world war, when it was dedicated to the Livorno composer Pietro Mascagni.
Another important building in Livorno is the theater Teatro Goldoni, which stands in the heart of the city, and has reopened recently after having had to close due to the pandemic. It is the only theater to remain unscathed during WWII bombings. It is a neoclassical building with characteristic roofing nicknamed “la lanterna di cristallo” (“the crystal lantern”).
A building which needed reconstruction work after the war is the cathedral Cattedrale di San Francesco, the Duomo of Livorno. Most of the façade was damaged during the bombings and was completely rebuilt. The frescoes in both chapels were also damaged, and unfortunately haven’t reached our time.
Being a port city, Livorno’s cuisine has a strong tradition of seafood dishes. Enthusiast of this type of cuisine must taste the cacciucco, a soup typical to Livorno, made with different kinds of fish, mussels, and shellfish. There isn’t a lack of northern seafood, such as salted codfish and stockfish. Typical of northern seas, salted codfish is readapted to Mediterranean cuisine with the dish “baccalà alla livornese”. In Livorno, this is a typical dish for Christmas Eve feasts. The fish is fired and then cooked with tomatoes and garlic. It is often served with stewed potatoes.
