The stronghold Rocca di Sala: a view over Pietrasanta and its luxury villas
Pietrasanta’s history, luxury, and art
The stronghold Rocca di Sala, also called Rocca Ghibellina, overlooks the historic centre and blends in the town’s medieval look. The building is named after Sala, the village it used to protect. Sala would become Pietrasanta in 1255, founded by the Milanese nobleman Guiscardo Pietrasanta. In the verdant hills that surround this beautiful historic centre, Broker Immobiliare Exclusive Real Estate lists farmhouses and stately and luxury villas.
Part of the crenelated walls running along the hillside are visible from the town square. The stronghold Rocca is reachable through Via Della Rocca between Chiostro di Sant’Agostino and Giardino della Lumaca. The road runs uphill to align with the wall. Though the hill is very steep, the walk is worth it: from up there you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the square and historic centre below.
The stronghold Rocca is quadrangularly shaped, and it used to have a tower at each corner and a keep. You can only view it from the outside, as unfortunately it isn’t open to the public and it has a massive gate. The Collegiata di San Martino, a church in white stone with a red brick bell tower, and the Piazza Duomo with its shops, bars, and restaurants stand out in the view you can enjoy from the Rocca. The view spans all the way to Versilia’s shores.
Pietrasanta is known for combining modernity and history. The medieval Piazza Duomo is an outdoor art gallery for modern and contemporary art exhibitions. The town fair Pietrasanta Medievale, which takes place in early October, is an excellent chance to take a step back in time. Minstrels, musicians, falconers, and flag-throwers recreate a medieval atmosphere. Hawks and owls can be seen at the falconers’ pavilion. To feel an active part of this recreation, children and adults can try their hand at archery.
